After you complete this course you will have the skills necessary to pursue a career in computing in a wide range of commercial and industrial organisations. This module introduces the Software Engineering concepts that are needed to develop software systems that can meet basic functional requirements within a given problem domain. It covers the main steps in the process of developing such systems, from requirements analysis through to their implementation and testing. A major part of the module involves students working in teams to develop a web-based software system, which gives practical experience in teamwork and managing software projects and their products. Students who have successfully completed a Polytechnic Diploma may be considered for entry to our undergraduate degree programmes .

The software industry is protective of its licensing revenue and, if you are discovered, you and your business could face prosecution. Some versions of this type of licence may require you to activate the software. This allows the supplier to check that the software is installed on just one PC.

Graduates in non-computer-related subjects may consider taking a postgraduate IT conversion or technical postgraduate course. Many employers will also look for evidence of continuing professional development outside of the classroom. Project programming experience can be used as evidence during the application process to show that a candidate is technically adept and also has effective problem-solving skills.

Applicants studying A levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, will be eligible for direct entry if you meet your chosen programme’s entry requirements. The University has established Advance Standing Agreements with 5 Polytechnics in Singapore which provide guidelines for some of the Diplomas we will accept and scores required by certain departments . Departments that are not part of this list can still consider Diplomas for entry to undergraduate programmes.

Many students who have studied in the Philippines have followed a 12 year education system. For admission onto an undergraduate degree programme, the University of Birmingham requires all applicants to have studied for 13 years, and therefore you may need to take a foundation year before commencing your undergraduate programme. The University will considered students who have grades required are I – II in six CAPE units, including 2 double-unit level courses with a minimum of II in each of these double-unit courses. The requirement for a subject taken to include I for A (A-level equivalent) and II for a B (A-level equivalent) in any required subject. Students with suitable grades at A level or International Baccalaureate may be considered for entry to an undergraduate degree programme.
